What we check once the old siding is off
Sheathing
The boards the siding is nailed to. With the old siding off, soft or rotted spots are finally visible, and they get dealt with before anything covers them again.
House wrap
The weather barrier over the sheathing. Torn or missing wrap gets patched or replaced, since a gap is where water gets in.
Window and door flashing
The most common leak point on any wall. A window head that was never flashed gets flashed now, while it's open.
Fascia behind the gutters
Rot behind an old gutter line is a common find, and it gets fixed along with the siding instead of being left for later.

Full re-sides, repairs and trim
Full re-side
The old siding comes off down to the sheathing, the wrap and flashing get checked and corrected, and the new siding goes on to the manufacturer's installation spec. It's the one time in a house's life when everything behind the siding is visible, so it's the time to fix it.
Repairing one section
A cracked, warped or missing panel doesn't always mean a full re-side. If the rest of the siding is sound and the color and profile can still be matched closely, a repair costs less and solves the problem. If not, we'll tell you plainly.
Fascia, gutters and trim
Replaced with a re-side or fixed on their own. A gutter that's clogged or pitched wrong is usually what rots the fascia behind it, so the pitch gets fixed along with the board.
Matching older trim
A lot of South Shore houses were built before today's stock trim profiles, so corner boards and window casings don't always match what's on the shelf. We check that before anything is ordered, not once the crew is on site.

We had Sustainable Decks replace our old dilapidated deck and add an extension so it encompassed the entire back of our house. We could not be more IMPRESSED with their work. Questions people ask about siding
Can you repair one section instead of re-siding the whole house?
Often, yes. If the rest of the siding is sound and the color and profile are still made, or close enough to match, a repair is the cheaper fix and solves the problem just as well. If not, we'll tell you plainly that a re-side is the better call.
How long does a full re-side take?
A typical single-family re-side runs one to two weeks. It depends on the size of the house and on how much wrap and flashing needs correcting once the old siding is off.
Can new siding go over the old siding?
Sometimes, but we generally recommend tearing the old siding off. While it's still on, nobody can see the wrap, the flashing or the sheathing, and any leak behind it gets covered up for another decade.
Which siding needs the least upkeep?
Vinyl. It never needs painting, and an occasional wash keeps it looking finished. Fiber cement needs repainting, though far less often than wood, and cedar needs staining or sealing every few years to keep its color.
Why does fascia rot behind the gutters?
Usually because the gutter is clogged or pitched wrong, so water sits against the board instead of draining away. New fascia behind the same gutter rots the same way, which is why we fix the pitch along with the board.
